# What is read: every defect class and whether a reader raises it

The rule book defines 38 defect classes across the five components and the opportunities list. A class is a rule; a reader is the code that raises it from evidence. A class nothing reads yet is marked so in the rule book (`read_status: not_yet_read`, with an empty `read_by`), and a **sound** result says nothing about it. This page is the list, generated from the rule book's `read_by` on every class, so a reader of a rating does not have to find it in the method statement's fourteenth section.

**Read** means a reader raises the class today from the kind of evidence named (the rule book's evidence source kinds; [the rule book page](/docs/certification/rating/rule-book#source-age-limits) lists them with their age limits). **Not yet read** means the rule exists and no reader raises it: the reason is given, and what would make it readable.

Under rule book v2.6: 27 of 38 classes are read. Of the 11 not yet read, 7 would move the grade (they are leaks or risks) and 4 are opportunities, which are never scored.

## Identity (7 of 8 read)

| Class | Kind | Read | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exploited recording has no ISRC | leak | Read | The owner's attestation |
| ISRC collision or recycling | risk | Read | Society portal or works database; TrackForge's copy of a public register or catalogue; a public catalogue read live for the top-up set |
| Work has no ISWC where the route allocates one | risk | **Not yet read** | The owner's PRS export carries no ISWC column, and The MLC's bulk data carries one but The MLC does not allocate ISWCs. PRS's work record does carry its references, ISWC among them, so the class is readable from the society portal reading; a reader is not yet built, because an ISWC is allocated after registration and a record past its age cannot show that a work has none today. |
| Conflicting ISWCs for one work | risk | Read | Society portal or works database; CWR acknowledgement; TrackForge's copy of a public register or catalogue |
| Writer without IPI on a controlled share | risk | Read | Society portal or works database |
| Duplicate work registrations | risk | Read | Society portal or works database; the owner's account export |
| Title, artist or duration inconsistent across sources | risk | Read | Society portal or works database; TrackForge's copy of a public register or catalogue; a public catalogue read live for the top-up set; a manual reading by a named person |
| Work identity unresolved | risk | Read | Society portal or works database; The MLC's bulk data; CWR acknowledgement; the owner's account export |

## Title (7 of 8 read)

| Class | Kind | Read | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| PRS agreement binding inferred or assumed | risk | Read | Society portal or works database; the owner's account export |
| PRS agreement binding missing or conflicting | risk | Read | Society portal or works database; the owner's account export |
| Society holds a lower share than documented | leak | Read | Society portal or works database; the owner's attestation |
| Society holds a higher share than documented | risk | Read | Society portal or works database; the owner's attestation |
| No US Copyright Office registration (US-origin work) | risk | Read | TrackForge's copy of a public register or catalogue |
| Recorded termination notice | risk | Read | TrackForge's copy of a public register or catalogue |
| Reversion or term expiry within 24 months | risk | **Not yet read** | Needs agreement term dates. The owner's attestation does not capture them; PRS's agreement list carries a termination date and a post-term collection flag, and a reader can take an end date from it once one is observed. |
| The release's ℗ credit names another party | risk | Read | The ℗ credit on the release; a public catalogue read live for the top-up set; a manual reading by a named person; society portal or works database |

## Registration (5 of 5 read)

| Class | Kind | Read | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Not registered at a route where the work is exploited | leak | Read | Society portal or works database; The MLC's bulk data; the owner's account export |
| Registered under another party only | leak | Read | Society portal or works database; The MLC's bulk data; the owner's account export |
| Registered share lower than owned | leak | Read | The MLC's bulk data |
| Registered share higher than owned | risk | Read | The MLC's bulk data |
| Exploited recording absent from PPL or SoundExchange | leak | Read | Society portal or works database |

## Collection (3 of 6 read)

The collection component is scored only when the owner supplies statements; without them the rating reads "collection not assessed". The read classes are raised from society data whether or not statements were supplied, and their measured amounts are disclosed either way.

| Class | Kind | Read | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Registered, usage unmatched at The MLC | leak | Read | The MLC's bulk data |
| Usage matched to a different work at The MLC | risk | Read | The MLC's bulk data |
| Unclaimed share in the MLC, PRS or MCPS pools | leak | Read | Society portal or works database; The MLC's bulk data |
| No income over the look-back despite usage | leak | **Not yet read** | Needs statement lines compared with a usage measure over the same period. Not built. |
| Income to the wrong payee | leak | **Not yet read** | Needs statements naming the payee. The wrong-party floor names this class and *registered under another party only*; today it fires on the second. |
| Account on hold (e.g. MLC RFI) | risk | **Not yet read** | Needs a hold flag from the society's account view or the owner's export. The owner's PRS works list carries none (title, work key, roles, creators, IPI numbers, type, duration) and no MLC account export is read; The MLC's bulk data carries no hold flag. |

## Risk (3 of 5 read)

| Class | Kind | Read | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Competing claim or dispute flagged at a society | risk | Read | Society portal or works database; The MLC's bulk data |
| Un-merged duplicate shell at The MLC | risk | Read | The MLC's bulk data |
| Sources disagree inside their age limits | risk | Read | Society portal or works database; The MLC's bulk data; the owner's account export |
| Claim window closing (e.g. MCPS three-year clock) | risk | **Not yet read** | Needs the window's closing date per usage row. The MLC's bulk data shows usage held unmatched without its period, so no window can be dated from it. |
| Administration or sub-publishing agreement ending | risk | **Not yet read** | Needs agreement end dates. The owner's attestation does not capture them; PRS's agreement list carries a termination date, and a reader can take an end date from it once one is observed. |

## Opportunities (2 of 6 read; never scored)

| Class | Read | From |
|---|---|---|
| Registered, not yet exploited | **Not yet read** | Needs registration readings compared with the demand measure. |
| Registered at a society outside the in-scope routes | **Not yet read** | Would be read from CIS-Net. |
| Neighbouring rights not claimed | Read | Society portal or works database |
| Sync not represented | **Not yet read** | No source. |
| Physical exploitation not registered or claimed | **Not yet read** | Needs distributor sales or MCPS statement lines compared with registrations. |
| US Copyright Office registration available | Read | TrackForge's copy of a public register or catalogue |

## How to use this page

When a rating shows a work as sound on a component, read it against this page: sound means no read class was found, and nothing about the classes not yet read. The [method statement](/docs/certification/rating/method-statement#what-is-not-checked) says the same in words; the [components](/docs/certification/rating/components) table carries the per-component counts, and [the rule book page](/docs/certification/rating/rule-book) every class's factor. A class moves from not yet read to read only by a new version of the rule book, which names the change.
