# Worked examples

Three invented catalogues of five works each, rated by the scoring code under rule book **v2.6** (SHA-256 `306515c149029dc3c762238519d8e288a42171021cd604bd38b994976547144f`). Every number on this page is computed: the page is generated by rating each catalogue, and a test fails if it differs from what the code computes under the published rule book. The works and their titles are made up. The [method statement](/docs/certification/rating/method-statement) sets out the rules and the [rule book page](/docs/certification/rating/rule-book) every number they use.

## The catalogues

Each is five compositions by a UK songwriter, rated at tier 1 at PRS for Music, MCPS and The MLC. The owner declares an income mix of 60% performance and 40% digital mechanical. Digital mechanical income is split between MCPS and The MLC at the rule book's default US share of 40%, so the routes carry this share of the catalogue's expected income: PRS for Music 60%, MCPS 24%, The MLC 16%. Every route is material.

Each work's weight is 75% demand (its share of each channel's exploitation, weighted by the mix) plus 25% an equal share for every work. The owner holds the whole of each work, so no share scales it.

| Work | Performance | Digital mechanical | Weight |
|---|---:|---:|---:|
| W1 *Harbour Lights* | 400,000 | 300,000 | 34.25% |
| W2 *Paper Crown* | 250,000 | 200,000 | 23.75% |
| W3 *Slow River* | 150,000 | 120,000 | 16.25% |
| W4 *Winter Field* | 120,000 | 100,000 | 14.15% |
| W5 *Last Tram Home* | 80,000 | 80,000 | 11.6% |
| Total | 1,000,000 | 800,000 | 100% |

For W1: 0.75 × (0.6 × 400,000 / 1,000,000 + 0.4 × 300,000 / 800,000) + 0.25 / 5 = 34.25%.

## 1. A clean catalogue

Every work is registered at PRS, MCPS and The MLC under the owner, the identity and title checks find nothing wrong, the owner's statements show the money arriving, and no route shows a dispute. Every component scores 100.

| Work | Weight | Condition | What was found |
|---|---:|---|---|
| W1 *Harbour Lights* | 34.25% | Sound | Nothing wrong found |
| W2 *Paper Crown* | 23.75% | Sound | Nothing wrong found |
| W3 *Slow River* | 16.25% | Sound | Nothing wrong found |
| W4 *Winter Field* | 14.15% | Sound | Nothing wrong found |
| W5 *Last Tram Home* | 11.6% | Sound | Nothing wrong found |

| Component | Weight in the composite | Score |
|---|---:|---:|
| Identity | 15 | 100 |
| Title | 20 | 100 |
| Registration | 30 | 100 |
| Collection | 25 | 100 |
| Risk | 10 | 100 |

The composite is (15 × 100 + 20 × 100 + 30 × 100 + 25 × 100 + 10 × 100) / 100 = **100**, which on the scale is **AAA** (AAA starts at 95).

No floor applies.

**The letter is AAA**, issued.

## 2. One earning work not registered

The same catalogue, except that the second work, *Paper Crown*, is not registered at PRS although it is performed. Everything else is as in the first example. The deduction itself is small; what sets the letter is a floor, a limit no composite can buy past.

| Work | Weight | Condition | What was found |
|---|---:|---|---|
| W1 *Harbour Lights* | 34.25% | Sound | Nothing wrong found |
| W2 *Paper Crown* | 23.75% | Defective | Not registered at a route where the work is exploited (PRS for Music) |
| W3 *Slow River* | 16.25% | Sound | Nothing wrong found |
| W4 *Winter Field* | 14.15% | Sound | Nothing wrong found |
| W5 *Last Tram Home* | 11.6% | Sound | Nothing wrong found |

| Component | Weight in the composite | Score |
|---|---:|---:|
| Identity | 15 | 100 |
| Title | 20 | 100 |
| Registration | 30 | 85.75 |
| Collection | 25 | 100 |
| Risk | 10 | 100 |

Registration scores 100 − 100 × 0.2375 × 0.6 = **85.75**. W2 carries 23.75% of the weight. Its deduction factor of 0.6 is the defect's factor (1) times the share of the work's income that comes through PRS for Music (60%); the routes where it is registered deduct nothing.

The composite is (15 × 100 + 20 × 100 + 30 × 85.75 + 25 × 100 + 10 × 100) / 100 = **95.725**, which on the scale is **AAA** (AAA starts at 95).

Floors applied:

- *More than a tenth of a route's income unregistered*: 25% of PRS for Music's income weight is unregistered, and PRS for Music carries 60% of the catalogue's income, so 15% of the catalogue's income is unregistered there, more than the floor's 10%. The letter is capped at **BBB**.

**The letter is BBB**, issued.

## 3. Collection not assessed, one work read live

The same five works with every registration sound, but the owner supplied no statements, so collection is not assessed. The heaviest work, *Harbour Lights*, was released after TrackForge's copy of the release data was taken, so the copy cannot check its identity or title. The rule book's top-up lane reads it live from a public catalogue on the day, before the rating is issued.

### Before the reading

W1 is not checked for identity and title (reason: TrackForge's copy predates the release).

The composite is (15 × 100 + 20 × 100 + 30 × 100 + 10 × 100) / 75 = **100**, which on the scale is **AAA** (AAA starts at 95).

Floors applied:

- *Collection not assessed*: no statements were supplied, so the letter is capped at **A** and the rating is labelled a registration rating with collection not assessed. It is a limit of scope, not a defect.
- *The coverage ladder*: title coverage by weight is 65.75%, below 85%, so the letter is capped at **BBB**.

**No letter.** The run states why: identity coverage by count 80.0% over clusters below minimum 90.0%, and not 95.0% by weight with 75.0% by count (weight 65.8%); title coverage by weight 65.8% below minimum 80.0%.

### After the reading

The live reading finds nothing wrong, so W1 is sound for identity and title. A top-up reading sets identity and title only; it decides no route's registration. The rating counts the works each top-up source read: 1 from Spotify catalogue data, read live for the top-up set and dated by the read.

| Work | Weight | Condition | What was found |
|---|---:|---|---|
| W1 *Harbour Lights* | 34.25% | Sound | Read in the top-up lane: Spotify catalogue data, read live for the top-up set and dated by the read |
| W2 *Paper Crown* | 23.75% | Sound | Nothing wrong found |
| W3 *Slow River* | 16.25% | Sound | Nothing wrong found |
| W4 *Winter Field* | 14.15% | Sound | Nothing wrong found |
| W5 *Last Tram Home* | 11.6% | Sound | Nothing wrong found |

| Component | Weight in the composite | Score |
|---|---:|---:|
| Identity | 15 | 100 |
| Title | 20 | 100 |
| Registration | 30 | 100 |
| Collection | not assessed | — |
| Risk | 10 | 100 |

The composite is (15 × 100 + 20 × 100 + 30 × 100 + 10 × 100) / 75 = **100**, which on the scale is **AAA** (AAA starts at 95).

Floors applied:

- *Collection not assessed*: no statements were supplied, so the letter is capped at **A** and the rating is labelled a registration rating with collection not assessed. It is a limit of scope, not a defect.

**The letter is A**, issued.
