A work is registered differently when a society's accepted registration of it does not match the work you have saved, for example in its shares. Nothing changes until you choose. You can update the catalogue, prepare a revision for the society, or record why your catalogue is right.

## Before you start

- The work needs an accepted registration to compare with. The card names the submission it comes from. You can bring in old registrations by [uploading your registration history](/docs/workspace/files/registration-history): the CWR file and the society's response that accepted it, together.
- Only owners and editors can settle a difference. Save any edits to the work first: until you do, the page says **Save your edits before deciding on registration differences.**

## Steps

1. Find the work. After an upload, press the button that starts **Review** and ends "that work" or "those works". Or press **Review the differences** or the **Registered differently** tile on Today. The catalogue opens filtered to **Registration differs**.
2. Open the work. It opens at the card **Registration and catalogue**, with one section for each society.
3. Read the comparison. The pill shows **Registration differs from catalogue**, **Difference reviewed** or **Matches the catalogue**. A table with the columns **Detail**, **In your catalogue** and **In the registration file** lists the differences. **Ownership and shares differ** comes first, and other differences are folded beneath. Differences in letter case alone, internal IDs, or empty on both sides are counted, not listed. On anything wider than a phone, **Show this comparison larger** opens the same table in a wide window.
4. Under **Choose one way to settle this difference**, choose one of the three ways below.

## The three ways to settle it

**Update my catalogue to match the registration.** Your saved work takes the registered values shown. Tick **I confirm the displayed changes to shares, parties and control.** If an ISWC differs, you can also tick **Also apply the displayed ISWC change.** Then press **Update my catalogue to match**, which stays off until the first box is ticked. The page says **Done.**, lists the values taken with what each one was, and gives the new saved version.

**Keep my catalogue as it is.** Write why in **Why your catalogue is right (kept with the work)**, then press **Keep my catalogue as it is**. Your catalogue does not change. The society's registration is still different, and the work is no longer listed for review. Your reason stays with the work as **Intentional difference:**. That button stays off until you write a reason.

**Keep it and prepare a revision for the society.** Press the button that begins **Keep it and prepare a revision for**. A revision tells the society what your catalogue says, so its registration can be brought into line. Your catalogue stays as it is, and the form to [prepare a file](/docs/workspace/files/prepare) opens as an update for that society. The difference stays visible until that file is prepared. Then [download, send and record](/docs/workspace/files/send) it as usual.

## From the history file

The same three choices appear when you open a file in registration history and press **Review** on a linked work: **Update catalogue from supplied values**, **Mark reviewed**, which needs a **Review note**, and **Prepare revision**.

## If something goes wrong

- **The choices are greyed out.** You have unsaved edits on the work, or a save is still running. Save the work first.
- **There are no choices.** You can only look, or the difference is already settled.
- **The work is not in the list.** The comparison is made against an accepted registration, so a work without one is not listed. It may still be registered elsewhere.
- **A work list shows no shares.** It does not carry full shares or control terms, so they cannot be compared from it.
