title: Upload a response
description: "Upload the file a society sends back after you send it a registration file, and see how TrackForge read it."
keywords: [upload response, society response, ACK, acknowledgement, response files, V21, awaiting response]

After a society deals with a file you sent, it sends back a response file, called an [acknowledgement](/docs/cwr/glossary#society_acknowledgement). It is how the society says what it did with each work. You get it from the society, not from TrackForge. Upload it here and TrackForge reads it and shows the result for each work.

## Before you start

- Record that you sent the file. The upload box is part of that record. See [Download, send and record](/docs/workspace/files/send).
- Only owners and editors can upload.
- Have the society's reply to this file. It usually ends in `.V21` or `.ACK`. The box accepts `.v21`, `.v22`, `.ack` and `.txt` files.

## Steps

1. Open the file. On Today, find it under **Files in progress** and press **Upload the response**. Or choose **Files and responses** and open the file from **Preparation history**.
2. Find the record of your send under **Recorded deliveries and society responses**. Its upload box is named after the society, such as "Upload PRS’s response file".
3. Drop the file on the box, or choose it. The hint under the box, **Drop the file here or choose it.**, gives the file types, how many files you can add at once and the size limit for each.
4. Wait while the box shows **Reading the response…**. When TrackForge has matched the file to your recorded send, you see **Response read.** and a line about the result. If it could not be matched, there is no such line: find the file under **Response files you uploaded for this send** and read its state.

## What you will see

The line after **Response read.** says one of three things:

- The society replied, with a count such as "1 Needs correction · 4 Accepted". The result for each work is shown above the box. See [Understand a response](/docs/workspace/files/understand-a-response).
- The response answers a different file you sent. It is filed against that file, and the line says where to look.
- It is not the latest response from the society for this file, so the results have not changed.

Under **Response files you uploaded for this send**, each file shows what happened to it:

- **Matched to a recorded delivery**. The results are in.
- **Read, not yet matched** or **Saved, not yet read**. TrackForge has the file and has not finished with it.
- **Could not be read as a CWR acknowledgement**.
- **Conflicting response — kept for review**.
- **Already uploaded** comes before the state when you add the same file again.

**Download response** gives you the file back. **Download report…**, in Excel, CSV (in a zip) or JSON, appears only for a matched response. On Today, the card **Society responses** lists the responses you uploaded most recently, newest first. **Open the file** goes to the file it answers.

## If something goes wrong

- **There is no upload box.** The send is not recorded yet, and the page says **No delivery is recorded for this revision.** Record it first. You may also be view-only.
- **The file could not be read.** Check you chose the society's reply, not the file you sent.
- **The screen says no recorded delivery matches.** Check it is the acknowledgement for this file. TrackForge keeps it for review.
- **The file is too large or you chose too many.** The box tells you the limit.
- **You added the reply in registration history.** TrackForge matches it to the file you recorded as sent. See [Upload your registration history](/docs/workspace/files/registration-history).

If a file has had no response for a long time, Today says **No response after 30 days**. Upload the reply if you have it. Otherwise, check with the society.
