# Ask TrackForge

Ask TrackForge answers questions about registering works and using the Workspace. Its answers come from TrackForge's guides and music-rights sources, and each answer says which sources it used. It is being tried with a few workspaces first, so you may not see it yet.

## Open Ask TrackForge

Press **Ask** in the header, beside **Search**. The panel **Ask TrackForge** opens at the side of the page, so the screen you are working on stays in view. On a phone-width screen it covers the screen, with a shorter question box and the **Premium answer** tick beside **Ask**; **Back to the Workspace** closes it. Press **Ask** again, Escape, or the close button (×) at the top of the panel to close it.

You can also ask from the search box: open **Search**, type your question, and choose the row under **Ask TrackForge**, which starts **Ask:**. That is not the same as **Ask about your works**, which turns a question into the works list's filters: see [Getting help](/docs/workspace/help/).

## Ask a question

Type in **Your question** and press **Ask**. Before you ask anything, the panel suggests three **Questions to start with** for the screen that is open. Choose one to ask it.

While the answer is found, the panel reads **Searching the guides…**, then how many sources it is reading, then **Writing…**. The answer appears as it is written, under your question at the top of the panel, so you read it from its start. **Stop** ends it part-way.

Ask a follow-up in the same box: the panel remembers the last few questions and answers. **Start again** clears the conversation.

Ask TrackForge does not change your catalogue or send anything. It tells you what to do and where.

## Explain a problem or a response

**Explain** sits under a problem that Ask TrackForge can explain, beside **What this means** where that is shown: on a work's **To do** panel, among the checks on a prepared file, and in the panel **What is holding your works up**. It asks what the problem means and how to fix it, and opens the panel with the answer.

On a society's response, **Explain this response** asks what the society's response means and what to do next. On Today, in the card **Society responses**, a response with rejections, conflicts or duplicates also has **Explain**.

What the panel is explaining shows at its top, after **Looking at**. Before a society's words are sent, the work titles and names the Workspace knows are replaced with **\[title]** and **\[name]**.

When the work's latest check no longer has the problem it explained, the answer says **Fixed: this no longer shows on** and the work's title.

## Read an answer and its sources

An answer marks what it took from each source with the source's number in square brackets, such as \[1]. The sources are numbered in the order the answer first uses them, and listed in that order under **Sources** below the answer; choose a number to go to its source.

- A source from these docs opens inside the panel. **Back to the answer**, which stays at the top of the panel as you read, returns to the answer, and **Open the page** opens it in a new tab.
- A source from TrackForge's music-rights sources shows its title, who published it and the passage used. **Open the original** opens it where it is published online. A document with no web address has no link.

Where an answer names a screen of the Workspace, a button such as **Take me there** takes you to it.

An answer that draws on TrackForge's rules or music-rights sources ends with the line **Information from the sources shown, not legal advice.**

When the guides and sources do not answer a question, Ask TrackForge says so, with an email link to TrackForge.

## Premium answers

A Premium answer reads many more of TrackForge's music-rights sources, takes longer to think, and can be longer. It is marked with a crown and the word Premium.

- To ask for one, tick **Premium answer** under the question box before you press **Ask**. While it is ticked, the line below says how many are left this month.
- Under a standard answer, **Ask again with Premium** asks the same question again as a Premium answer.
- **Explain** always gives a standard answer first, even while the tick is ticked. Use **Ask again with Premium** under it for more.
- When the guides do not answer a standard question, Ask TrackForge may look further by itself. The answer then reads **The guides do not answer this, so this answer looks further.**

Each workspace has 100 Premium answers a month, shared by everyone in it. They start again on the 1st of each month. The **Plan and billing** card on the Account page shows how many are left, under **Premium answers**. Standard answers are not counted.

When the month's Premium answers are used up, a question asked as Premium gets a standard answer, with a line saying when Premium answers start again.

## What is sent and kept

Your question, the conversation's last few turns and, for **Explain**, the society, rule and codes of the problem are sent to search the guides and sources and to write the answer. TrackForge adds no work title, writer or publisher name or share. If you type one, it is sent as you typed it.

TrackForge keeps no question and no answer. The conversation stays in your browser tab, and is gone when you close the tab or press **Start again**. TrackForge keeps a count of each workspace's answers each month. The [Privacy Policy](https://trackforge.studio/privacy), section 13, names the companies that handle the question.

## If something goes wrong

- **There is no **Ask** button.** Ask TrackForge is not switched on for your workspace yet.
- **The panel says **Ask TrackForge could not be opened. Reload the page to use it.**** The Workspace has been updated since the page was opened. Reload the page.
- **The panel says to give it a minute and ask again.** Many questions have been asked in a short time. Wait a minute and ask again.
- **The answer stopped part-way.** Press **Ask again**.
- **The panel says **Ask TrackForge is unavailable just now. Try again in a moment.**** Wait a moment and ask again. If it keeps happening, choose **Contact support**.
- **The panel says answers are paused until a date.** TrackForge's limit for the month has been reached. **Search** still finds help pages.
- **The question is too long.** Keep it to 1,000 characters.
- **A source does not open in the panel.** Choose **Open the page** to open it in a new tab.
